Using Email Safely
Follow these guidelines when handling email in order to help protect yourself:
- Be skeptical of attachments.
- Watch out for links to websites included in an email.
- Never transmit financial, account, or any other information you consider private via email.
- Be suspicious when you receive an email asking you to enter personal information.
- Never reply to spam.
- Don't panic if you receive an email from someone you either don't know, or didn't send a message to, stating that you sent them a virus.
- Handle attachments with care.
Internet Safety
- Do not give out personal information such as address, telephone number, parents’ work address/telephone number without checking with your parents.
- Never agree to get together with someone you meet online without first checking with parents and meeting in a public place.
- Talk to your parents about posting pictures of yourself or others online.
- Do not respond to any messages that are mean or in any way make you feel uncomfortable.
- Talk with your parents so that you can set up rules for going online.
- Do not give out passwords to anyone other than your parents.
- Check with your parents before downloading or installing software.
- Be a good online citizen.
- Understand how to have fun and learn things online using the Internet, computers and other technology.
